My work friend P speaks French beautifully, so when I received an invite to Beau est Mien’s grand opening, he, by default, became my translator. I couldn’t go along not knowing how to pronounce the business name, right?
Beau est Mien (translating to ‘beautiful is mine’) is French designer and artist Magali Dincher’s gorgeous little baby. The business has been around since 2009 (and a regular at Perth Upmarket), but the William Street store is the next step for the quirky designer.
One word came to mind when we entered the dainty little Northbridge space. Cute! And I mean cute overload. I’m a stationary freak, so when I stepped into the light and airy store I was in heaven. Handmade wrapping paper, cards, notebooks and ink stamps were dotted around the space, alongside locally made jewels, kitschy brooches and other gorgeous pieces. Magali’s stunning handmade and hand coloured prints adorned the walls adding colour and fun to the pure white space.
Upstairs houses a print making studio where Magali offers classes in screen printing, lino cutting, etching and more. I couldn’t get over her “mood board” style collages pinned to the studio walls. Even I was inspired!
The launch brought together an eclectic mix of people young and old, and I was so excited to see a long line of customers waiting to purchase Magali’s darling pieces.
This happy girl came home with the most adorable cat brooch ($15) and a fantastic pack of handmade polka dot envelopes. Delicious. If I wasn’t off to Sydney later in the week I’d have purchased one of everything.
Beau est Mien Prints & Designs is open Tuesday to Sunday, located at 458 William Street, Northbridge. Head over to the website for opening hours and workshop information. Or pop in, you’ll be very surprised.
