WHO: Francesca Gnagnarella and Ethel & Leo / WHAT: Summer Rising Exhibition / WHEN: Tuesday November 25 / WHERE: North Fremantle / WHY: Because Summer is coming, and who doesn’t enjoy a mix of art and fashion midweek.

When I think Summer I instantly visualise a pastel sunset sky, enjoying a cider (or three) with friends in the sunshine, bright lipstick and the beach (of course). All of these things featured at the Summer Rising event held last Tuesday in Fremantle, a collaboration between local artist Francesca Gnagnarella and Perth’s quirky print queen Jess of Ethel & Leo. I attend many different types of events every month, but I just have to say this was probably one of the most gorgeous and intimate events I’ve ever been to. It’s not a common occurrence to be invited into a random home (unless you know the owner of course), but artist Francesca had the crazy beautiful idea of holding her exhibit in her riverside apartment to really show people how art can make a room. I almost felt intrusive capturing her world, but it was a lovely honour to be invited to share her life, stunning French furniture and art! Exploring one room at a time, I was very surprised at how much art can bring to a home. It was like summer had swept through the apartment and settled into her dwelling like a warm haze. Her art dotted the walls, bringing warmth to the stark white colour scheme, creating a stunning contrast with the Ethel & Leo pieces positioned around the apartment. Francesca’s pieces absolutely caught the essence of summer, featuring abstract sunrises and sunsets in stunning pastels, brights and golds. It was impossible to choose a favourite piece as they were all so eye-catching and beautiful. Francesca herself was a lovely soul, and you can see she puts a lot of time and passion into her artwork.

Art and fashion work beautifully together, and I loved that Ethel & Leo were also featured on the night. It really is my kind of brand. You all know I can’t pass up a bright, different print and that is Ethel & Leo to a tee. The new stock we previewed at the event stayed very true to the brand. Fruity, festive, quirky – the collection is everything you’ve come to know and love from the local lady. Any of Jess’ designs would be perfect for a gorgeous Summer day out, and I certainly have my eye on a few dresses… Now how do I justify needing more clothes?

Ethel & Leo can be found in Claremont or at MANY6160 in Fremantle, they’re one of the new kids on the block at the creative hub so go make them feel welcome. Francesca’s beautiful pieces are available via her website, and keep an eye out for her upcoming events and exhibitions on her Facebook page. Big thanks to the girls for the invite, I was ready to move into the apartment as soon as I stepped foot in the door. Who doesn’t enjoy a champagne on the balcony overlooking the river and lights of Fremantle post viewing a stunning Summer exhibit? Heavenly ladies.

What do you visualise when you think Summer?
