If you’re anything like me words can be a powerful motivator. When I’m feeling down or icky a simple inspiring quote can brighten my mood or dull whatever is irking me. They’re also perfect when you’re feeling not so wonderful and need reassurance that everything is going to be okay! Sometimes they make you think, but sometimes they’re exactly what you need. Perth creative Steph Tugnett is one lady who realised how often people need a good affirmation to perk them up, and created a business based on beauty and inspiration. Meet Steph!
Who is Steph in five words?
A passionate, loving, curious yet predictable introvert.
What do you do and why?
Creating affirmation products started as a passion and hobby but grew to something I do part time. I love all things positive and I believe that reflects in my work. The dream would be to work on it full time.
What’s a typical day like in your world?
I am a creature of habit and I like that! I work full time in administration so I’m up early, then into the office for the day. I always make time to exercise at lunch as I find it releases any negative energy or stress from my day and reenergises me for the afternoon.
After work hours are spent working on stephsayssmile, new products, creative ideas with my designer, and packing and sending orders I have received from my online etsy store. I also spend a lot of time researching local markets in Perth that I can attend to sell items from my range.
Life is definitely about balance so some nights after work I switch off completely from stephsayssmile and spend time my partner, go for a walk, catch up with my girlfriends or indulge in a book or a good girly show and a glass of wine… or two!
Where do find inspiration?
I find inspiration from passionate and honest people, people that work hard, chase their dreams and those who spread positive energy to the world. My biggest role models are my parents and Louise Hay.
What is coming up for you in the future?
‘The best is yet to come’ is a favourite motto of mine, so you shall have to keep up to date with me on social media and see what is coming next!
What’s your favourite thing about the Perth creative scene?
The way creative people are embraced! I love to see people celebrating the uniqueness of each individual on the creative scene and the respect and passion they have for one another!
Where is your favourite places to eat, drink, and shop in Perth?
As cheesy as this is (and I have no problem with being cheesy), my favourite place to eat is at home. I am a rubbish cook, (honestly I’m just rubbish), but my partner is the opposite and makes the most incredible meals. He also loves cooking so I am very lucky to be able to spend time with him at home and eat some amazing meals.
When I do like to go out for a bite and indulge I love Rockpool and my girlfriends and I are on a quest to find the best burger in Perth so we have had some fun doing that once a month. I am honestly the hamburglar!
My favourite place to shop are your local markets! I love supporting local businesses and one of my earliest memories was exploring the local markets with my mum. I have been fortunate to have had people support me in return as a market stall holder.
What is your biggest achievement to date?
Starting stephsayssmile on a whim in 2013 was HUGE for me. To see my small hobby grow to a range of over 100 prints, greeting cards, journals, calendars and diaries was incredible. I am so proud of following my passion and working hard for something that meant the world to me and being able to share a positive message.
Why is motivating and inspiring people so important to you?
There have been times in my life where I myself have felt low or unmotivated, and it was passion, positive energy, purpose and gratitude that helped me through the hard times. Realising that life can be hard, but you also need to appreciate the good in each day and live your life with a purpose was a big wake up for me.
I feel it’s important to share love and positive energy with people who also might need to be reminded of that! I love that my products can do that and also bring a little sunshine to someone’s day.
