Like It Local Perth: Emer Rose Makeup Artistry

I envy those with a steady hand and an eye for detail. Perth makeup artist Emer Lyall ticks both of those boxes. Bringing a touch of colour and style to faces all over Perth, the creative brain loves helping her clients enhance their natural beauty with stunning pops of drama and femininity. Makeup is definitely a life safer in my opinion, and sometimes you need that extra special face to complete your look. From weddings to balls to fashion shoots, Emer’s background in dance introduced her to the world of lipstick and blush, and she hasn’t looked back since. Meet Emer!
Who is Emer is five words?

Creative, supportive, talkative, friendly and pale!

What do you do and why?

I am a freelance Makeup Artist and Eyelash Technician in Perth. I love being creative and working with other creatives on photoshoots and events while also using my skills to make my clients feel beautiful!

What is a typical day like in your world?

During the week I do about three eyelash extension clients per day and on weekends I either have a wedding from the early hours of the morning until lunch time or I start normal occasion makeup from 11am until about 6pm…makeup artists don’t have a social life haha!

How do you juggle your business and regular life?

It’s definitely hard to separate work and life when you have your own business as I never really ‘leave’ work and it is always with me. I’m forever answering phone calls and emails to clients and future brides so sometimes it does get quite stressful! You just need to sit down and plan out your schedule. I always make sure I have at least one day off during the week (usually Wednesday) because I know I need a lot of energy for when the weekend comes around.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration through a lot of other makeup artists on social media! I’m a big believer in supporting those in your own field. We all grow from each other and I love re-creating looks from artists I look up to! Instagram is definitely my go to for inspo at the moment.

What drew you to a career in makeup artistry?

I was actually a ballet dancer for 14 years and for a good while I thought that was going to be my career until I sustained a bad injury. So when that happened I turned to makeup artistry. I’ve always been around it with my dancing but never thought of it as a career until I did my Certificate II in Makeup Services through a high school program when I was in year 11. That was when I realised I had a huge passion for makeup and haven’t looked back since!

What are your top three make up essentials?

Eyebrow gel, mascara and lipstick!

What is your favourite type of look to create?

I love a very soft pretty look with lots of highlighter and fluttery lashes.

What’s your favourite thing about the Perth creative scene?

I really love how we are all so supportive of each other through social media! I also love the great events we attend during the year allowing us to meet and collaborate with upcoming creatives!

Where are your favourite places to eat, drink and shop in Perth?

My favourite place to eat would have to be Claremont! Favourite place to shop is either Joondalup Shopping Centre or the City and my favourite place to drink would probably be Scarborough!

What is your biggest achievement to date?

Probably organising my own runway show at the RAW arts event last year. Also being recognised and interviewed by Today Tonight was pretty awesome!

Anything exciting coming up in the future?

Not at the moment, but I do have big plans regarding my own makeup studio! Watch this space.
So if you do have a special event coming up and you want to make it even more special Emer is your girl! You can find her over on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube (if you want to try and do it yourself). Now what do I have coming up that I need a makeup artist for?

  1. Being a Mum to a toddler, I don’t wear make up a lot, but when I do, my top three essentials are: a good base that looks natural, like a BB cream or a mineral powder foundation, mascara, and either pawpaw ointment or a nice subtle gloss for my lips. Also, whilst not technically make up, my favourite perfume is a must, makes me feel glam even if I look like sh*t.

    • They are my everyday essentials too! BB cream is a saviour! And you can’t not have perfume. Great choices honey 🙂
