If you spend as much time on social media as I do, you would have seen that text “meme” floating around. The one that says…
“Decided my 2016 starts again on February 1st… This was a trial month”
I don’t know why it irked me so much but it’s been popping up all over the place and you know what guys, just no! There tends to be this idea that the start of a new year means the chance to “rebirth” and try new things and clean up your life and start a fresh. But you know what – it’s not true. Granted it seems like a perfect time to get organised, get fresh and get your shit together, but you can do that any day of the year. You can do it now. You can do it June 16. You can do it three weeks from whenever. But stop putting pressure on yourself. I wrote a bit of a personal post last week about self reflecting. A few yucky things have happened lately and it got me thinking about new beginnings and what I want to do with my life and the rest, but I didn’t feel I had to restart the entire year due to a few hiccups. I got back up, got over it and went on with my day. Yes, I may have put a few wheels into motion for things I would like to do with my life, but I didn’t beat myself up that things weren’t running as smoothly as they should be a month in.
It’s time to start appreciating the small wins in life. The little things. The smiles and laughter and adventures. Over the weekend I spent time with two of my friends who I’ve known since I moved up to Perth nearly nine years ago now. We used to work together back in our uni days and we’d spend pretty much every night together. Nowadays we catch up when we can, but it still feels like it did back when we were younger. We met up for drinks, we celebrated my friend C’s promotion, we drank a little too much wine, we danced under the stars to a random DJ in the middle of Fremantle’s city square by ourselves and ended the night with a completely random swim in the ocean in the early hours of the morning. I wasn’t thinking about having to get up early the next day, I wasn’t dreading the incoming hangover (which actually didn’t arrive), I wasn’t stressing about all the work I had to do the next morning for the blog. We were in the moment, we were free and we embraced it. Small wins. It was pretty much a perfect evening. And to me, that is living. Embracing the small wins, embracing the moments of pure happiness and no worrying, forgetting the daily bullshit and just living!
I want you to do the same guys. Maybe your January wasn’t exactly what you wanted or expected. Maybe you thought you’d be further along in your journey by now, but we are only human! Start appreciating what you do have. Did you cook an amazing meal last night? Win! Did you get through your to-do list even if it took longer than expected? Win! Did you survive a shift at work without complaining once? Win. Make note of those small wins for the times you’re feeling shitty or like you’re dropping off the path you plan on taking. Remember that a win is a win regardless of what it was. Remember to let yourself go sometimes and embrace whatever is thrown at you. A new fresh chapter can start whenever the hell you want, but life is going to move in waves and if you fall down, pick yourself back up. That’s life.

2. I laughed until I had tears in my eyes at a cabaret show thanks to Fringe World Perth. That kind of laughter is medicine for the soul.
3. I didn’t have a panic attack at my most recent denist appointment – this normally happens. I’m so grateful it didn’t happen Monday.
4. I realised I’ve now lost 4KG in the last month cutting carbs and processed crap from my diet. Yes, I’m still treating myself every now and then but yay! My pants are feeling looser.
