What I Wore: The Winter Skirt

Just because it’s a little chilly out, doesn’t mean I’ve packed away my Summer wardrobe. I’m not one of those girls who has seasonal sections, I tend to wear a lot of things all year round. And skirts is one of them. If you follow my Instagram page you’ll see I’ve been wearing midi skirts on the regular to my day job, but today I wanted to talk about the mini and how to incorporate it into your Winter wardrobe.

Last year an article came out about why people needed to stop wearing black stockings. Um… WTF moment much. The “journalist” went on to say it wasn’t “socially acceptable” to wear stockings and no one in the fashion pack would ever be caught dead wearing them. Well she was wrong because I did some Google stalking and here are BeyoncĂ©, Rihanna and Alexa Chung all wearing them. So that was a bit of a dramatisation. And a bit of a ridiculous comment to make. Personally I love stockings. They’re great for in between weather, pairing with shorts or a dress and cute boots plus they elongate the legs and warmth is extremely important. Duh. So I say yes to tights in Winter because they are one reason I’m able to continue wearing my summer and autumn clothing without freezing my butt off!

This skirt was a fabulous find at Portmans (on sale) a few months back. What drew me in was the a-line cut, gorgeous khaki fabric and the quirky pocket and zip detailing. I don’t own anything like it and I just had to have it, even though I knew we were moving into Winter. I knew the deeper colouring would work in the cooler months though, so home it came with me! I’ve worn it a few times, but on this occasion I wanted to incorporate a 1970’s vibe, which is still very trendy this season.

This top is another New Look Singapore find (see what else I picked up at New Look here) and I was immediately drawn to the floral print against the deep blue silk. The colour scheme is very Autumn and transitions well into Winter. You can never have enough pretty tops, as they can be worn from work to play with a few styling changes. I also picked up this fuzzy knit cardigan in Singapore at Forever 21. I love the “boyfriend” style and suede patches on the elbows. The detail is eye catching and quirky, just the way I like it. Forever 21 is another store Perth needs ASAP, as it very affordable and stocks every single trend under one roof. Fan girl right here. A dash of floral, an oversized knit and a felt wide brim may have given the skirt more warmth, but you know what the key item for wearing a mini in Winter is? Stockings of course! A simple pair of black opaque’s brought the entire outfit together! And kept me warm. Easy peasy. You can get them anywhere and everywhere and guess where I found this pair of Bonds stockings? At my local Coles! Brilliant hey!

If you need more convincing on wearing skirts in the Winter months my fellow bloggers can help you out some more. Jo at iCurvy discusses all things Winter maxi’s here, Kimba at Kimba Likes talks layering with skirts here and Jasmine at Pretty Chuffed has put together a cool edit of Winter midi’s here.

I can’t proclaim enough how much I love slipping into stockings in Winter, regardless of whether they’re considered fashionable or not. A good pair of tights has kept my Summer wardrobe open for the taking this season. I hope you too have been inspired to continue wearing your non-Winter clothes. Why waste them if you love them and they’re trans-seasonal. Who makes the fashion rules? You do!

How do you wear skirts in Winter? Are you a fan of the 70s trend?

  1. Stockings are out, indeed!! What a joke. I love stockings/tights/leggings and I don’t care what anyone else has to say about that! I like to try and wear stuff year round if possible and a good pair of tights is the only way you’ll see me in a dress or skirt during the colder months! Love this outfit!

  2. Love your hat! It’s definitely not summerish, but such an elegant piece! 🙂
