STYLE TRENDS: Mustard

Every season, colour authority Pantone release a swatch of colours that are going to be big. And I mean become the “in colours” for the next six plus months, appearing on the catwalk, in your favourite furniture stores and in every clothes shop you visit. We all know that Rose Quartz and Serenity were dubbed the colours of the year, but what about the colours of this season? A/W 16 has been all about dusty reds, emerald greens and my favourite of the lot – mustard yellow. Spicy Mustard made the hot list for this season, and it’s apparent Pantone has once again picked a winner, as the rich and vibrant colour has been everywhere, and has even made itself at home in my wardrobe. I’ll admit something now – I’ve never been a fan of yellow! Maybe because it brings out the yellow pigments in my skin, or maybe because it was so out there, but I actually didn’t own anything in the yellow family until mustard had a resurge in popularity. What I love about mustard is it still has that uplifting, positive feel of yellow, but it’s somewhat bolder and richer. It has a more orange undertone than green, and the bolder hue just works a lot better with my skin. Yay! I can finally wear a shade of yellow!

Being a huge Pinterest stalker, I tend to take a lot of fashion inspo from cool pins I find online. Whilst scouring the site recently I found myself pinning a lot of mustard cardigans, beanies and printed dresses. And I knew it was time to jump on the mustard bandwagon. I picked up this extra large, super comfy mustard knit jumper at Big W earlier in the season (similar here). As soon as I saw it I knew it had to be mine as it brightened my mood immediately – plus I knew it’d brighten dreary, chilly days too. I decided to purchase the knit in a size up from what I’d normally wear as I like the look of a sloppy boyfriend style piece, particularly with skinny jeans. At under a $20 note it was a total bargain, and the perfect addition to my wardrobe. Knits are just perfect in Winter as they’re almost like wearing a blanket out – comfort first friends!

Since picking up this knit I’ve worn it on multiple occasions, even purchasing a similar one for work that is a little more fitted. I tend to wear this one with a good pair of thick skinny jeans and a fun blouse underneath. I love the “preppy” look of a collared shirt underneath a jumper, especially when the blouse features a great print, like this Princess Highway polka dot top (similar here). The combo is quirkier than adding a plain colour underneath, yet the black and white pattern doesn’t take away from the bold mustard. I also added my favourite “fake specs” I picked up on eBay. Yes, I said fake specs. Although I’m as blind as a bat and I wear contact lenses on the daily, I just can’t seem to wear my real glasses anymore. They make me feel nauseated as they are too far away from my eye balls (contact lens wearers will get this). I love the look of glasses but unfortunately fake, clear lenses are all I can wear these days. They’re an accessory for those of you having a lol at me right now! Ha! Promise I wish I was wearing real ones. This outfit was inspired by my favourite blogger Steffy’s Pros & Cons. Her looks are so hip and quirky, I’m just obsessed.

If you’re looking for more mustard inspo, here is how a few of my favourite bloggers have styled the vibrant colour. First up, the inspo behind this post, Steffy at Steffy’s Pros & Cons shows us how to team mustard with a skirt in Winter here, Jo at iCurvy has a few tips on how to add a splash of mustard to your every day outfits here, Sonia at Sonia Styling admits her colour crush on mustard here with some cool shopping links for you to get your paws on and Bev at Iris May Style discusses accents of mustard in this great post here.
