Like It Local Perth: AVA

It’s a funny thing when you meet someone in the creative industry who you just click with. The lovely Petra, mastermind and designer behind Perth fashion label AVA is one of those people. She’s bubbly, vivacious and full of beans with design and styling skills to boot, and like myself knows that fashion has to be versatile (yet still stylish) to get you from day to night. That is AVA in a sentence.

EVENT: Hatched 15 Exhibition

Thought provoking contemporary art has once again taken over the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) for the annual Hatched 2015 graduate showcase. The best and brightest of fresh Australian talent are on display from now until June, and this really is one exhibition you cannot miss out on.  My friend L and I braved the chill in the air Friday to attend the opening party, and it was people watching heaven! A beautiful mix of all ages and walks of life were out to appreciate the countries rising art stars. Featured artists included WA’s Leah Allen-Ankins and Adelaide’s Patrick Heath, while NSW’s Andrew Styan took out the grand prize of $35,000 to pursue his creative adventures. Big congratulations!         Although I don’t know all the technicalities of contemporary art, the beautiful pieces on display left me feeling inspired and evoked so many questions and thoughts. That is the kind of art I enjoy – the odd and over the top, the bizarre and different and you’ll find plenty of that at the Hatched exhibit. …

Hi March. I’m not sure if I’m happy or sad to see you. Mixed emotions really. It’s nice to be getting into Autumn (even though we’re still enjoying the Summer sunshine), and March is technically closer to my birthday (April baby right here), but I don’t know where last month went! What a blur! I’m hoping the rest of the year will slow right down… Fingers crossed.

Colour brings a little bit of spark to my life. Whether it be a cute, bright print dress or a pop of red lipstick, colour is one of my ultimate tools for happiness. What is not to love about vibrancy and standing out? As the brilliant style blogger Kim-Marie aka Kimba Likes put it…“I firmly believe that colour makes me happy”. Her post How To Add Colour To Your Life is permanently bookmarked and if I’m ever feeling dull or flat it’s my go to. Another lass who knows colour, and lives colour is local Perth artist Linzi Carter.

Brunch Club: Cantina 663, Mount Lawley

Weekends are for spending time with your favourite folk, squishing in everything you didn’t have time for during the week. I have a few really close friends, and the particular group I spent the weekend with have been around forever. Well, not forever, but since I moved to the city a good eight years back. We sadly don’t get together as often as I’d like due to conflicting schedules, and well, life, but when we do hang out it reverts back to exactly where we left off last time. And we share one common interest that makes planning a weekend outing simple – we are all brunch obsessed!
